A Reflection on Black History Month

As February comes to a close, I wanted to take a few minutes to reflect on our awesome Black Hair History posts for the month and what it means to me. I knew I wanted to honor the history and legacy that is Black History Month, but I wanted to put a twist on it. Often during this month we tend to “stick to the script” and recycle a handful of black pioneers, inventors, and freedom fighters with a few little-known black history facts thrown in and that’s it. I don’t mean to take away from this practice because we don’t want any of our history to get watered down or lost. Undoubtedly, history will always need repeating.

As I thought about my position, as a stylist and salon owner, I realized that this would be the first time that I was able to do something on a much larger scale. Sure, in the past I’ve always made posts and contributions pertaining to Black History Month online, but to have my company represent this legacy alongside me (and proudly, I might add) meant something more. I wanted to showcase our industry alongside the pioneers that have not only made history and a difference in their respective careers, but have completely changed the game in the hair industry as well.

We dedicated our Instagram page solely to the pictures, biographies, and quotes from people that we all know and love, and are personal “hair” inspirations for me. When you think of Halle Berry, you can’t not think of her signature textured pixie. Venus and Serena’s beaded braids were radical and statement-making all on their own. Tina Turner’s hair is arguably more iconic than her legs! And the list goes on and on. We had such a great time compiling this list, researching their lives, and reminiscing over their iconic hairstyles. We hope you enjoyed them too!

If you haven’t already, check out our selections for Black History Month on our Facebook and Instagram pages, and leave a comment on your favorite feature!

Always with love,
